Neck Lift
As a result of the natural aging process or weight fluctuations, individuals may start noticing weak neck muscles, wrinkles, and sagging skin forming on the neck. The appearance of a “turkey neck” often occurs when the skin loses its ability to regain tightness after stretching, as well as the platysma muscles loosening. Fortunately, our board-certified plastic surgeon performs neck lift surgery to smooth, tighten, and rejuvenate the neck region with natural-looking results. Dr. Andrew Cohen can customize a neck lift treatment plan for qualified patients who want to improve their neck contours for a more youthful appearance.

What Is a Neck Lift?
The neck lift is a surgery designed to address loose, sagging skin in the jawline and neck, while tightening visible muscle bands in the neck. Liposuction may be required if localized fat is present in the neck and needs to be removed. Many patients choose to have a neck lift combined with a facelift for a more comprehensive treatment. During your consultation, Dr. Cohen will evaluate your skin to determine if optimal results can be achieved with neck lift surgery on its own or if complementary treatments are necessary.
Am I a Candidate for Neck Lift Surgery?
You may be a candidate for neck lift surgery if you are bothered by sagging skin, excess fat, or visible muscle bands in the neck area. Ideal candidates are typically in good overall health, non-smokers, and have realistic expectations about procedure outcomes. A common age range for patients is between 40 and 70 years old, though individuals outside this range may also benefit from neck lift surgery. This procedure can be an excellent option if you wish to achieve a more youthful, defined neck and jawline when non-surgical treatments are no longer sufficient.
A consultation with Dr. Cohen can help determine if you are an ideal candidate for neck lift surgery.
What Does the Neck Lift Procedure Involve?
Neck lift surgery is an outpatient procedure typically performed under general anesthesia. Dr. Cohen starts off the surgery by making inconspicuous incisions behind each ear. In some cases, he will make an additional incision under the chin. Dr. Cohen will use the incision sites to smooth loose or wrinkled skin, tighten neck musculature, and (if needed) remove excess fat with liposuction. The neck will be sculpted until the desired contoured appearance is achieved. The procedure usually takes one to two hours, depending on if complementary surgeries are performed.
For patients with more advanced signs of aging or heavier necks, Dr. Cohen may recommend the deep plane neck lift technique. This approach involves tightening and repositioning the deeper platysma muscle, while also removing fat beneath the muscle to refine the jawline and neck contour. By addressing these deeper structures, this technique can create more dramatic results compared to a traditional neck lift.
What Can I Expect in the Neck Lift Recovery?
Some patients may experience swelling, bruising, or numbness after neck lift surgery, but these symptoms usually subside within a week. Pain medication and ice packs can help mitigate any discomfort or inflammation you may experience. If liposuction was performed, Dr. Cohen will provide you with a compression garment for the neck. He will also give you a specific time frame for how long you will need to wear it. The majority of patients return to their daily activities after one to two weeks; however, patients should avoid strenuous activities for about four to six weeks so that the incision sites can heal properly. Dr. Cohen provides patients with detailed post-operative instructions to help the recovery period be as smooth and as comfortable as possible.
How Long Does a Neck Lift Last?
When performed by a qualified plastic surgeon like Dr. Cohen, neck lift results can generally last 10 to 15 years, though this can vary based on factors such as skin quality, genetics, lifestyle, and aging. While this procedure cannot stop the natural aging process, it can tighten muscles, remove excess skin, and enhance contours for a more refreshed look. Maintaining a stable weight, practicing good skin care, and avoiding smoking and excessive sun exposure can help prolong your results. Over time, your neck will continue to age naturally, but it should always appear more youthful than if you had not undergone surgery.
Will I Have Scars from Neck Lift Surgery?
Dr. Cohen does his best during the neck lift procedure to make incisions in less noticeable areas. Incisions are usually made behind each ear; however, some patients may need a third incision under the chin. Depending on your unique treatment plan, you may need all three incisions or just the entry points behind the ears. Most patients find that the scars heal very well and become less visible over time. In addition, scars from neck lift surgery are typically easy to hide since they blend into the natural contours of the head and neck.
Is It Possible to Get a Non-Surgical Neck Lift?
While a surgical neck lift offers the most dramatic and long-lasting results, several non-surgical treatments can improve the appearance of the neck. Options like DEKA DOT CO2 laser resurfacing can tighten skin, reduce fine lines, and improve skin texture by stimulating collagen production. This fractional laser treatment can deliver noticeable skin rejuvenation with minimal downtime. Other non-surgical options, such as injectable treatments and skin tightening devices, can further enhance your neck contour. However, it is important to note that non-surgical results are generally more subtle and may not correct significant sagging or muscle laxity. During your consultation, Dr. Cohen can help determine the best approach for your aesthetic goals.
How Much Does a Neck Lift Cost?
The cost of a necklift can vary based on the complexity of your unique treatment plan. In addition to the complexity of your unique treatment plan, factors that can affect your total expense include:
- Surgeon’s fee
- Anesthesia fee
- Hospitalization costs
- Surgical costs
- Cost of post-operative garments
- Cost of medications
- The geographical location of the surgical facility
