Dr. Andrew T. Cohen is a board-certified plastic surgeon with extensive experience in performing calf implant surgery for patients desiring a more defined, sculpted lower leg. Because many people find it difficult to develop the calf muscles despite a strict diet and exercise regimen, Dr. Cohen offers the calf implant procedure to provide a better balance for patients’ lower bodies, which can often increase their self-confidence in addition to meeting their enhancement goals.
During the initial consultation, Dr. Cohen and his patients will discuss the calf implant surgery expectations and treatment plan, including everything from the pre-operative preparation to the recovery process. Dr. Cohen will also share some common benefits and risks, as well as the most likely long-term outcome his patients can experience with calf implant surgery.
Most calf augmentation procedures are performed on an outpatient basis, with local anesthesia and light to deep sedation, or under general anesthesia. The procedure will typically last about 45 minutes to 1 hour depending on the individual case. Dr. Cohen will make an incision below the crease of the knee, which is an area that should conceal any remaining scars once the surgery has healed. The calf implant is then inserted to provide a shapelier, defined lower leg. Once Dr. Cohen has placed the implant, the incision is closed with sutures and the healing process begins.
During the initial recovery period, the calves and lower leg area may be sore and stiff. Some swelling and bruising should be expected, and any pain can often be managed with medication and the help of Dr. Cohen. Full activity can typically be resumed within 5 to 7 days; however, physical and vigorous activities such as exercise should be avoided until at least six weeks following the procedure.
